The History Behind Lucus's Closet

At just 18 years old, Lucus found himself homeless in the dead of winter after a major falling out with his family. With nothing but a bag of clothes and a tent, he set out alone, determined to survive on his own terms. The cold was unforgiving, but he found a secluded spot behind thick shrubs where he built a small fire to stay warm. Wrapped in every layer he had, Lucus still shivered, his future uncertain.

One evening, just before dusk, a man out riding his snowmobile noticed smoke curling up from behind the brush. Concerned—it was unusual to see smoke in that area at that time of year—he stopped to investigate. That is when he found Lucus huddled by the fire. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the man sat down and talked with him for over half an hour, learning that Lucus had been offered help before but never felt truly safe or welcome. Gently, the man persuaded Lucus to come home with him. They packed up what little Lucus had, and the two rode off together through the snow.

Back at the man’s house, Lucus was given a choice: eat a hot meal or take a shower. He chose the shower. Forty-five minutes later, warm, and clean, Lucus joined his host in the kitchen and together they cooked dinner. That night, and many nights after, Lucus stayed. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and eventually, Lucus stayed for three years.

During that time, with the support and stability he had long been denied, Lucus earned his GED and began to think seriously about his future. Encouraged by his newfound mentor, Lucus enrolled in college. Years later, he graduated with his RN degree and has since earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Today, he works as a Nurse Practitioner at a major hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Lucus and the man who helped him remain close, checking in monthly. In May 2025, the man learned that Lucus is engaged and planning to marry in the summer of 2026—a milestone that once seemed impossible.

The inspiration for Lucus’ Closet comes from his own difficult experiences. When he was in school, his family could not afford personal hygiene products or school supplies, leaving him feeling ashamed and isolated. That shame contributed to his decision to drop out of school. Now, Lucus is committed to ensuring that no student must feel the way he once did.

Lucus’ Closet is more than a resource—it is a reminder that small acts of kindness can change a life. It is proof that there are still good people in the world who expect nothing in return but are willing to help someone in need find hope, dignity, and a second chance.
