Providing Personal Hygiene Items To Students In Need
The Evolving Need for School Supply Closets (2021–Present)
Since 2021, the demand for in-school supply closets has increased significantly across the United States, particularly in economically disadvantaged communities. The COVID-19 pandemic not only disrupted traditional learning environments but also exacerbated financial instability for countless families. As students transitioned back to in-person learning, schools witnessed a substantial rise in the number of children arriving without access to basic essentials such as pencils, notebooks, backpacks, hygiene products, and appropriate clothing.
In response, many schools began formalizing previously informal, teacher-led initiatives aimed at supporting students in need. These efforts gave rise to designated school supply closets—commonly referred to as care closets, comfort closets, or resource rooms—which offer students free access to essential items. These closets are typically sustained through generous donations from local businesses, faith-based organizations, community groups, and nonprofit partnerships.
Since 2021, school districts have increasingly collaborated with organizations such as Blessings in a Backpack, United Way, and Communities in Schools to expand and maintain these resources. In many cases, the scope has broadened to include weekend food bags, emergency clothing, and other necessities—recognizing that addressing basic needs is foundational to both academic achievement and student well-being.
Today, the presence of a well-stocked school supply closet is not merely a supplementary resource—it is a critical component of an inclusive, supportive educational environment. These closets ensure that all students, regardless of their economic situation, have the tools and dignity they need to succeed.
About Lucus's Closet
Lucus Closet is a nonprofit initiative operating under the Teacher & Students Empowerment Network, dedicated to supporting homeless, low-income, and unaccompanied students by providing access to basic necessities that promote health, dignity, and academic success.
We distribute individually packaged snacks, meals, and non-perishable food items to students who may face food insecurity after school, on weekends, or during academic breaks. In addition, we supply personal hygiene products and other essential daily items to meet students’ needs with respect and care.
Our services are provided at no cost to students and families. As a registered 501(c)(3) organization, we are proud to operate with zero administrative overhead—ensuring that 100% of all donations directly benefit the students we serve.
Our first major distribution event is scheduled for January 2026, during which we will deliver supplies to more than 60 schools—including at least one school in each of West Virginia’s 55 counties. These deliveries will include food, hygiene items, and other basic essentials.
In addition to scheduled distributions, Empowerment Closet responds to urgent, student-specific requests made by school staff. Through the generous support of our donors and the reach of our Facebook platform, we are able to meet immediate needs—such as clothing, shoes, and personal items—in real time.
Your support makes a direct and lasting impact. Together, we can ensure that no student is left without the essentials they need to thrive—in school and beyond.
