A Group of Caring Professionals Working Together
The WVKF is a dedicated team of compassionate professionals committed to helping children and families overcome challenges and move toward long-term self-sufficiency. Our mission is to remove barriers so every child can get to school, succeed in school, and build a strong foundation for future success. Through five phases of support, WVKF connects youth and families with essential resources, linking them to our extensive network of community organizations, businesses, and caring volunteers who partner with us to make lasting change possible.
Crisis Intervention
Our work with youth and families experiencing homelessness or hardship often begins with urgent support for transitional housing. This need frequently arises when overcrowded living situations become unsustainable, when families separate, or when colder weather makes sleeping in a car unsafe. Sometimes, just a few nights in a hotel, reliable transportation, or assistance with a security deposit is enough to provide stability and set a family on the path toward recovery.
Community Partnership
One of the greatest obstacles to overcoming poverty is isolation—the lack of trust or awareness of where to turn for help. Even a handful of supportive relationships can provide life-changing hope and empowerment. At WVKF, we believe one of the most valuable resources we can offer families is connection. Through our network of community partners, we link families to affordable housing, mentoring, tutoring, transportation, household essentials, and many other vital supports
Family Collaboration
Each year, hundreds of children and youth in Wood County, West Virginia face unstable living conditions that contribute to truancy—not out of defiance, but often due to embarrassment, lack of resources, or the absence of supportive adults. Simple interventions, such as a bus pass, a bike with a lock, or even an alarm clock, can make a significant difference in helping students engage with school and feel part of the wider community.
The West Virginia Kids Foundation partners with schools and community organizations to provide essential supports, from haircuts and clothing that reduce bullying to washers and dryers in school buildings that ensure students have clean, reliable clothing. When children’s basic needs are met, they are more likely to attend school, participate in mentoring and tutoring programs, and gain a genuine opportunity to succeed.
Economic Stabilization
Our expanding network of businesses is committed to supporting single mothers by providing reliable first-shift employment that allows them to both earn a living and care for their children. At the same time, we help parents pursue continuing education and career development, offering targeted support—such as access to a computer, night classes, or professional attire—to help reignite aspirations and build a pathway toward stable, self-sufficient lives.
Post-Secondary Success
As Benjamin Franklin wisely noted, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” For families focused on day-to-day survival, looking beyond tomorrow can feel impossible. One of the most fulfilling aspects of our work with children and youth is helping them expand their horizons—through field trips to workplaces, career guidance, college visits, savings programs, and scholarship opportunities—giving them the tools and support to turn their dreams into reality.
